On March 5th, 2024, Verhaert Masters in Innovation let sparks of product innovation fly during the Sustainability Paradox event at UAntwerp’s Science Park in Niel. Visionary voices and seasoned experts in innovation, engineering and R&D joined forces and together unraveled the secrets of successful sustainable design and circular business models.

Ecodesign balances sustainability and profitability

Sustainability takes a central position within R&D and innovation, think about meeting stricter regulations and standards in terms of environmental protection, delivering long-term impact, efficient use of available materials and energy, and meeting the growing consumer interest in sustainable products and services.

Nevertheless, many companies struggle to find solutions that are both sustainable and profitable or to integrate sustainability into their core business. For that reason, Verhaert brought together experts from C-Battery, Circular Valley, DEME, UAntwerp, VITO and in-house teams to share success strategies and best practices to overcome the sustainability paradox in different domains.

Joris De Lamper, Manager of Innovation Acceleration and host of the seminar adds: “Ecodesign is not only a moral duty to future generations, it’s also a source of innovation and competitive advantage. How can we make the right trade-offs and design solutions that take into account environmental, economic, and technological factors? That’s the question we wanted to answer during this event. By giving each other the most specific strategic management advice possible, we can work faster toward various sustainability goals.”

Full circular life cycles: optimally closing the cycles

Sustainable design is about innovation on several fronts. As an organization, you can’t get stuck in a certain ‘sustainability tunnel’ as this makes it much more difficult to respond to external changes. Many companies lack a common framework to sharpen their perspective and definitions around sustainability.

Karine Van Doorsselaer, professor of materials science and ecodesign at UAntwerp, refers to the ‘butterfly diagram’ of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. This visualization showcases the circular economy and provides a clear blueprint for companies to work toward. It also maps the entire product life cycle to assess the total environmental impact. To efficiently close the cycles, it’s recommended that the consumer has as little responsibility as possible. This way you avoid contaminated waste streams due to improper sorting behavior. An alternative to making the circular system successful is to introduce an end-of-live incentive toward the end user, as with deposit systems.

Competitive business models

To be competitive against current linear economic business models, you need strong partnerships throughout the value chain. Only when each stakeholder enjoys added value within the model will the likelihood of adoption increase.

Product-as-a-service business models are very interesting in the context of sustainable design. Indeed, the producing party benefits from designing them according to other design drivers, for example, design for disassembly and design for repair. Even though this switch can be investment-intensive, companies can draw strength from strong partnerships and adopt hybrid models as an intermediate step.

“The Sustainability Paradox was the ideal combination of inspiring success stories, practical insights, and interactive discussions with both speakers and participants,” concludes Damien Feuillan, seminar participant. By connecting the Belgian ecosystem across borders with new partners such as Circular Valley, Verhaert created a platform to share key success factors and potential solutions. Together for sustainable innovation!

Are you on an exciting journey to discover emerging innovative solutions that address the pressing issue of climate change? One such groundbreaking technology is direct air capture (DAC). Let’s take a moment to envision a future where environmental responsibility seamlessly connects with innovation.

Direct air capture (DAC): extracting CO2 from the atmosphere

Imagine a world where we possess the power to extract carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air. Although the technology has existed for years, the concept might sound like science fiction, right? However, it’s a tangible reality: the groundbreaking technology is called direct air capture. Imagine DAC as a giant vacuum cleaner of the atmosphere, snatching up CO2 molecules as you effortlessly vacuum dust from your carpet.

The power of DAC: contributing to clean energy solutions

Ventilation systems are integral to direct air capture (DAC) processes, especially in large buildings or factories where they play a crucial role. These systems actively draw in substantial amounts of air, using specialized filters to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). These filters are key components composed of solid or liquid materials with an affinity for trapping CO2.

Once these filters have absorbed a sufficient amount of CO2, the challenge is to release it. Heat becomes the solution as it’s utilized to extract and expel the captured CO2 from the filters. This process involves leveraging the thermal energy to facilitate the release of the trapped carbon dioxide.

Direct air capture (DAC) offers more than air cleansing capabilities. When combined with bioenergy processes, carbon capture and storage facilitates the production of emission-free green energy, including hydrogen-based fuels. This symbiotic integration provides clean power for homes and vehicles, further solidifying DAC as a solution contributing to environmental sustainability and the energy sector.

A transformative solution, balancing economic intelligence with environmental sustainability

Playing a crucial role in the battle against climate change, direct air capture (DAC) contributes to reducing CO2 levels and, in essence, provides the Earth with fresh air.

Direct air capture (DAC) stands out for its economic promise, particularly when integrated with current heating and cooling infrastructure and tapping into residual thermal energy. It becomes increasingly cost-efficient, especially with the financial incentives offered through emission trading schemes and carbon removal credits. The challenge lies in developing durable filter materials. Yet, with ongoing technological advancements and supportive regulatory frameworks, DAC is up for a transformative role, offering substantial benefits for businesses and the environment.

What makes DAC even more remarkable is its economic viability. Leveraging existing ventilation systems and utilizing residual heat, DAC has proven to be a cost-effective solution, adding a touch of economic magic to its environmental impact. Here, there is a potential breakthrough technology. By making direct air capture (DAC) small and affordable enough and integrating it into air conditioning systems (which already provide air circulation and heating/cooling – exactly what our DAC needs), this technology could be a game-changer.

However, another challenge arises: how do we ensure that something meaningful happens with the captured CO2 in all these air conditioning systems? This question shows the need for a comprehensive approach to address besides the capture also the subsequent utilization or storage of the collected carbon dioxide. It opens the door to exploring innovative solutions and creating a holistic framework to manage effectively the captured CO2 within carbon capture systems (both direct air capture DAC, as well as point source capture).

In addressing the sustainability challenge, DAC unravels a paradox. It showcases that being environmentally conscious and economically savvy are not mutually exclusive. DAC serves as a model that demonstrates the harmonious coexistence of eco-friendliness and economic intelligence.

So, next time you hear about DAC, remember it’s like a superhero vacuum cleaner that cleans our air and powers our future!

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from 2023, it’s that digital technologies are changing our lives more rapidly than ever. Based on the first events and announcements, we can already tell that 2024 promises many exciting opportunities in digital innovation and transformation. From AI, custom platforms and clean tech, to AR and data-driven insights, take a look at the 5 trends that we think are worth your attention this year!

Artificial intelligence

I know we’re kicking in an open door, but if you think we’re at the peak of AI in innovation, think again. Where last year companies were experimenting with generative AI, and machine learning in general, these experiments will reach maturity in 2024 and the first outcomes and successes will only spark further innovation. AI will become more and more integrated into our daily private and working lives.

The technology will further prove its opportunities to increase productivity, boost customer experiences and improve decision-making based on facts and insights. Think copilots, autonomous vehicles, facial recognition, AR, disease detection, threat prevention, the list goes on. Effectively incorporating AI into the digital transformation journey to create true added value will prepare businesses for the future.

Watch our webinar on AI-infused innovation

Clean technologies

As everyone continues to admire the opportunities with (generative) AI and machine learning, it’s very easy to forget about the massive impact these technologies have on our environment. Take ChatGPT for example. Current (conservative) calculations estimate that the tool generates about 43.000kg of CO2 per day. That’s the equivalent of the carbon footprint of 80 people. Per day, and that’s just to keep it running.

This issue will only grow as more and more applications are being released, more and more data is collected, which then again will be used to train more and larger (and smarter) models. Will 2024 be the year we also focus on making them more clean and energy efficient?

Learn how to design energy-efficient deep-learning algorithms

Independent platform development

If we can believe current predictions, BigTech will only continue to grow in the coming years. So why then do we believe independent solutions are also on the rise? Relying on ready-made solutions from tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Intel and NVIDIA means a lack of personalization and competitive features. And those happen to be two of the most pressing issues of digital solutions, your differentiation toward competitors.

They are following the example of companies like Tesla, take back ownership and developing platforms and components custom to your company’s needs. This allows them flexibility and out-of-the-box offerings. It reflects a desire for autonomy in technology development, aligning solutions precisely with organizational needs and market demands, while maintaining control over costs, data, and strategic direction.

Learn how Cowboy redefined the e-bikes with a software-first approach

Data-driven innovation

It’s clear that data will continue to be at the heart of digital transformation in 2024. The rise of smart and connected products and services, not only enables companies to provide better and instant experiences for the end user, it could also give them a lot of data. Using that data strategically will help you set up the right systems from the start to collect not just any data, but valuable data.

Leveraging these large and complex datasets with advanced AI then allows you to extract crucial insights to put you at the forefront of innovation. Going beyond efficiency gains, these strategic insights can help you in the decision-making process as well as create new added value. The first step in every process is awareness, then you can dig deeper into those insights to get to the root of it.

AR/VR/MR

A question that comes back every year, is if AR, MR and VR will make their big comeback. And year after year, we come to the realization it did’t really take off. Nevertheless, these systems did continue advancing and especially the surge of AI could make them more accessible and attractive to businesses and consumers.

So could this mean that AR, MR and VR will get a strong foolhold in not just in the gaming industry, but also in retail, maintenance, healthcare, learning and navigation?
We for sure believe there are many opportunities for grabs, like virtual try-ons, home previews, remote assistance, patient follow-ups, online and virtual training, safety measures (virtually) and so much more.

And what about…

Web3.0, blockchain, NFTs, the metaverse, quantum computing, AGI, drones, robots, traveling to Mars, creating brain interfaces, self-driving cars, room temperature superconductors, hyperloops, nuclear fusion, streaming games, super fast internet from space, self-healing materials, autonomous vessels, TikTok’s world domination, X, … we’re all following that up for you. Stay tuned!

2024 is already showing it’ll be a pivotal year for digital innovation, where strategic decisions will shape the future of businesses. Time to embrace these trends and stay ahead in an ever-evolving digital landscape!

In the digital innovation arena, it’s clear that AI and IoT are indispensable to creating added value. How do you determine which direction to follow? And how do you go beyond what everyone else is doing? That’s where outcome-based innovation comes in. Instead of making incremental product improvements based on fragmented user feedback, you evaluate which ingredients of outcome-based innovation, enabled by new technologies, better address critical or hidden user needs. It allows you to create a completely new offering that stands out amongst the fierce competition.

How can you create new added value through outcome-based digital innovation? And when looking at software solutions, how do you connect devices to a smart, robust, and agile platform? In this blog, we’ll dive into the importance and requirements of data-driven insights. If you attended the Innovation Day of 2023, the next sentence will certainly ring a bell: data is a staple in making outcome-based innovation thrive. Why? Personalized experiences and increased intelligence are key attributes in this kind of innovation, and you can’t personalize without acquiring user insights. Let’s dive into the transformative process together!

Bypassing persistent obstacles

A wonderful example of outcome-based innovation: most medical treatments have been designed for the ‘average patient’. As a result of this ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, treatments can be very successful for some patients but not for all. Outcome-based medicine takes into account individual differences. It gives medical professionals the resources they need to target the specific treatments of the illnesses. During the Innovation Day, we showcased how we’re helping Cochlear accelerate its innovation roadmap with outcome-based innovation.

As a manufacturer of hearing aids, it continuously aims to provide all patients with a personalized patient-centered hearing experience. How do you do this when on the one hand, there’s not enough data to start building these solutions? And on the other hand, current testing methods are very time-consuming for both patients and healthcare personnel, who are already overextended and don’t give real-time insights into the ‘normal’ experiences of hearing aid users. Stuck in the status quo, Cochlear leaped into developing its mobile research app to conduct follow-up tests from home and a system to analyze and monitor this data.

Strategic foundations

As mentioned in the beginning, outcome-based innovation allows you to go beyond small incremental innovation. But that doesn’t just ‘happen’. Before you start discussing possible product features, you need to define your goals. What’s your dream product? Your ‘North Star’ to guide you throughout the innovation process? By detailing the different use cases of your ideal product, you’re mapping the key points of your digital innovation process. Spending sufficient time on your use cases is crucial to pinpoint potential risks and powerful features, but also to align resources, customer satisfaction, and compliance with user and regulatory standards.

Bad data, bad insights

So how does this relate to data-driven insights? Well, just like in any other innovation trajectory, you first need to properly define and validate what you want to build before you start building it. The key is of course to define the data range. Innovation comes from searching for and going beyond the borders of the current frame of data. And that means opening up data to a broader real-world setting, beyond the obvious setting. Take the case of Cochlear: they want to provide all patients dealing with hearing loss, with a tailored hearing aid. However, it could only move from incremental innovation by stretching the frame of data toward real-world settings. No easy job, since every patient has different needs and wishes in different environmental settings. Which information do you need for this to work? Patient histories, environmental settings, and different lifestyles, and hearing tests in those new real-world settings, all create new data.

Yet a greater database doesn’t necessarily mean more insights. If you don’t align from the start with the information you need to provide your service, you’ll create enormous waste in your data pools. Even if you want to learn from this data, it’ll be much more complicated and time-consuming to find trends in unlabeled data (it’s glorified trash). In addition, mapping the necessary input from the start allows you to combine input and eliminate redundant information, ultimately reducing the total cost.

Key takeaways

The path to groundbreaking innovation is paved with invaluable data. While AI and IoT form the basis of digital progress, the true differentiator lies in outcome-based innovation, as illustrated by Cochlear. A crucial takeaway from this innovation approach is the emphasis on data quality from the outset. Aligning use cases with necessary information prevents information overload and helps you avoid bad insights and unmanageable data pools. So your success will hinge on the correct use of data as the catalyst for transformative, user-centric solutions.

In an era where urban mobility is rapidly evolving, it’s the companies that fully integrate software solutions that are taking center stage. A clear example of this is Cowboy, a Belgian eBike manufacturer, that has been making waves in the industry with its pioneering approach. By fully committing themselves to seamlessly melding software and hardware, they’re redefining the eBike experience. In this blog, we’ll explore how complete software integration can set your company apart from the competition.

Just as we explored Tesla’s strategic decision to independently integrate its software, another fascinating example in the mobility landscape is that of Cowboy. Their decision to integrate software and hardware positions them as pioneers in the evolving digital landscape of biking.

The advantage of being fully integrated on the software side will be a crucial differentiator in the coming years. – Tanguy Goretti, Founder at Cowboy

The power of software integration

Software integration, a strategy that is often associated with industry disruptors like Tesla in the automotive world, is a game-changer in the mobility landscape. Cowboy has embraced this approach, recognizing that software plays a pivotal role in the modern eBike experience. This means you bring software and hardware development in-house, enabling greater control and innovation, while competitors rely on third-party solutions.

So how are other eBike manufacturers approaching software integration then? The recent announcement by Bosch and their new premium subscription Flow+ serves as a thought-provoking comparison. Cowboy’s prior offering of similar functionalities through a subscription service for their riders demonstrated their early foresight in providing value to customers. In contrast, classic bike brands, locked within the Bosch ecosystem, might face uncertainty in accessing vital data and building meaningful customer relationships.

©Cowboy app with built-in Google Maps

Sophisticated suite of functionalities

To truly understand the benefits of software integration, it’s crucial to dive into the technical intricacies of this approach. Let’s take Cowboy’s eBikes as an example again. From an intuitive user interface to seamless connectivity options and user benefits, Cowboy can offer features like smart navigation, predictive alerts, crash detection, theft protection, direct bike support, online communities and profile building.

By developing these features in-house, you have full control over your offering, flexibility to adapt to new trends, build a direct relationship with customers and can learn from the data you collect. You can elevate user experiences to new heights, not just in terms of product capabilities, but also in terms of intelligent, user-friendly design. All this without relying on a third party to grant you access to these features.

Potential pitfalls and future developments

However, Cowboy’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges and risks. Software integration brings with it complexities in software and hardware development, resource allocation, and scalability. So any company’s ability to navigate these challenges through collaboration and multidisciplinary teams will be key to their long-term success.

That being said, this strategic move has already proven to be a crucial differentiator for many companies, positioning them at the forefront of the digital revolution. Speculating on what lies ahead, we can envision even more advanced features, seamless partnerships, and collaborations within the industry.

As we look ahead to an interconnected future, Cowboy’s pioneering spirit serves as an inspiration, not only for eBike enthusiasts but for anyone seeking to revolutionize an industry through the fusion of technology and innovation. Curious about the potential of vertical software integration for your business?
