The Belgian construction sector is at a major turning point. For years, the industry has been defined by hard manual labor, fragmented data, and a heavy administrative load. However, the recent release of Innovation Paper 49 by Buildwise marks a definitive shift in direction. The core message is clear: by 2030, artificial intelligence will no longer be a high-tech ‘extra,’ but a fundamental utility – as indispensable to a project as electricity or the internet. While the global industry often seems to be in a digital hibernation, the study by Buildwise, with Verhaert’s support, demonstrates that AI is the necessary lever to finally overcome chronic problems such as labor shortages and low profit margins. In this post, we are sharing the real-world insights from our recent workshops and a new toolkit designed to help you bridge the gap between digital theory and daily site challenges.

The true cost of hesitation

Sticking to traditional, ‘old-school’ methods is becoming a risky gamble. When information is trapped in silos or kept on paper, it creates an ‘innovation gap’ that eats away at profitability. For an industry already operating under tight margins, this lack of standardization is a structural constraint. Companies that wait to explore these digital tools risk losing their competitive edge and becoming entangled in increasingly complex regulations governing sustainability and safety.

From theory to practice: Insights from the field

While the research began as a high-level strategic study, the real breakthrough came from making it practical for the people actually on the ground. During our workshops with HVAC installers and carpenters, we found that many professionals don’t see themselves as ‘tech people’ – they just want to solve daily headaches.

In our sessions with carpenters, we observed a strong desire to use these tools to reclaim time spent on paperwork and to reduce material waste. Meanwhile, HVAC specialists are considering AI as a digital navigator to help them navigate the maze of green energy subsidies and to begin repairing systems before a client even knows there is a fault. It isn’t about the technology itself; it’s about making the workday lighter.

The AI Toolkit bridges the gap between daily construction challenges and technological impact. By intelligently matching real-world needs with the right AI tools, we transform abstract ideas into concrete, stakeholder-focused scenarios for immediate implementation – whether for contractors, developers, designers, or project managers.

– Gerd Van Cauteren, Project Coordinator at Verhaert Strategic Innovation

A roadmap built for people, not machines

Because the jump to digital can feel overwhelming, we developed the AI toolkit designed to be as simple as matching three puzzle pieces. Instead of staring at a blank screen, you start with the human side of the business:

The challenge: You begin with a real-world pain point, like the hours lost to manual invoicing.

The impact: You define exactly what you want to achieve, such as a 5% boost in your profit margin.

The solution: You identify the specific digital co-pilot – like back-office automation – that gets you there.

This process turns a daunting digital transition into a structured, manageable roadmap tailored to your specific goals.

AI Toolkit NL
AI Toolkit FR

AI as your digital co-pilot

The real strength of these tools lies in their support for human expertise rather than their replacement. Buildwise positions AI as a strategic partner in three main ways:

Transforming the office: Streamlining repetitive tasks like email management and tender analysis so you can focus on the core of your craft.

Operational excellence: Using real-time data to monitor progress and catch errors early, which saves both time and money.

Building for the future: Helping to choose the right materials and energy setups before the first stone is even laid.

Strategic steps for long-term success

The transition to a more data-driven industry isn’t about a single ‘magic’ tool; it’s about a strategic shift in how we approach problems. By breaking down your biggest daily challenges and building a structured roadmap, you turn a complex technological trend into a clear path forward.

The future of construction belongs to those who view these tools as a means to work more intelligently and more sustainably. If you are ready to stop guessing and start building your own digital strategy, our toolkit is the perfect place to begin.

Imagine a future where waste is not an end product, but a valuable resource. This is the vision driving the ‘Circulaire Ecogrondstoffenhub Schendelbeke’ project of the Flemish waste processing association, ILvA. Discover how this pioneering initiative is transforming a composting site into a hub for the circular economy through strategic sourcing.

Moving beyond traditional waste management

Traditional waste management often focuses on disposal – landfilling or incineration. While these methods are necessary for managing certain waste types and reducing immediate volume, they inherently treat waste as an endpoint. This approach fails to recognize the potential value locked within waste streams, leading to resource depletion, high energy consumption for manufacturing new materials and significant environmental impact. The circular economy offers a critical alternative by treating waste as a potential raw material.

ILvA, the intermunicipal waste processing association for the ‘Land van Aalst’ region, is taking a bold step towards a circular economy with its Schendelbeke composting site. With support from VLAIO (Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship), they’re using strategic sourcing to transform the site into a hub for producing valuable resources from organic waste.

Strategic sourcing facilitates this transformation in 3 ways:

1. Innovation partnerships

ILvA is using an ‘innovation partnership’ procurement model. This allows them to collaborate with companies to co-develop and test innovative technologies for processing organic waste, specifically focusing on converting woody and reed-like fractions of green waste into biochar.

2. Focus on biochar

Biochar, a charcoal-like material, is produced through pyrolysis (heating in the absence of oxygen). It has numerous applications: soil improvement, carbon sequestration, water filtration and even as a renewable energy source. Because this production process requires highly specialized technology, ILvA utilized its innovation partnership model to secure the precise, cutting-edge pyrolysis equipment and expertise.

3. Pilot project

The project involves a pilot phase to test and validate the biochar production process at Schendelbeke. This pilot structure is used to manage the inherent complexity and uncertainty of new technologies. It allows for real-world optimization and ensures the chosen solution is technically effective, financially scalable, and ultimately de-risks the significant public investment before committing to full, industrial implementation.

A game-changer for climate and resource management

This project has the potential to be a game-changer for waste management and contribute to a more sustainable future:

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: Producing biochar from organic waste can sequester carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional composting or landfilling.

Valuable resource creation: Biochar is a valuable soil amendment that can improve soil fertility, water retention and crop yields.

Circular economy model: The project demonstrates a shift from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a circular economy where waste is used as a resource.

Guiding the transition

Verhaert Strategic Innovation played a crucial role in the early stages of this project. This involved essential strategic sourcing expertise in:

Stakeholder engagement: Organizing workshops and market consultations to gather technical and market input from potential users of biochar and technology providers.

Technology scouting: Identifying and evaluating different pyrolysis technologies to assess their suitability and alignment with project goals.

Strategic guidance: Providing strategic guidance to ILvA in developing the procurement strategy and facilitating the selection of the right innovation partner.

A model for circular transition

The ‘Circulaire Ecogrondstoffenhub Schendelbeke’ project is a shining example of how strategic sourcing can be used to drive the transition to a circular economy. By embracing innovation, fostering collaboration and leveraging the expertise of partners like Verhaert, ILvA is creating a model for sustainable waste management that can be replicated across Flanders and beyond.

Understanding how and why people choose circular products isn’t always easy. Consumer preferences shift, motivations evolve, and purchasing habits change. To stay ahead, companies need a clear picture of what drives customers and how to keep them engaged. But maintaining market leadership isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about continuously improving and adapting. That’s where product life cycle management comes in. By fine-tuning offerings over time, businesses can maximize success and keep products relevant for the long haul.

Understanding customer behavior in the circular economy

In the dynamic landscape of sustainable innovation, circular products and services are taking center stage. But just creating them isn’t enough. Companies need to understand what makes consumers embrace or ignore these solutions. At the core of this challenge is the need to design the value proposition effectively. What makes it stand out? Why should customers care? This is deeply intertwined with how emotional and rational thinking influence consumer behavior. In circular offerings, the real appeal often lies in how well they match consumer values, like sustainability, efficiency, and long-term benefits. Moreover, consumers can be part of the solution. But aligning with values isn’t a one-and-done task. It requires an ongoing commitment to life cycle management, ensuring products stay relevant as trends and expectations shift.

The role of nudging to overcome consumer resistance

Even the most compelling value propositions and best circular products won’t gain traction if consumers don’t see how they fit into their lives. That’s where nudging comes in—small, intentional efforts to steer behavior toward sustainable choices. Whether it’s through smart product design, engaging marketing that speaks to both logic and emotion, or incentives for responsible use that reinforce their role in the solution, nudging helps bridge the gap between good intentions and real action.

Of course, not everyone will immediately jump on board with circular products. Some consumers are hesitant, skeptical, or simply unaware of the benefits. In these cases, companies need to meet customers where they are—sparking conversations, offering education, and providing the right tools to make informed decisions that empower them as part of the change. This ongoing refinement is a key part of life cycle management, ensuring products continue to meet consumer needs.

Paving the path to circular success

At the end of the day, winning in the circular economy is about more than just great products—it’s about understanding people. If you’re ready to take your circular strategy to the next level, now is the time to act. Start by evaluating your value proposition, test new approaches, and fine-tun your life cycle management strategy. Need help? Let’s collaborate to drive real impact and innovation together. With the right mix of consumer insights and gentle nudges, companies can create solutions that not only meet demand but also drive real change. And with continuous adaptation and smart life cycle management, they can stay ahead of the curve while making a lasting impact, paving the way toward a more sustainable future for all.

Wit-Gele Kruis West Flanders is committed to delivering high-quality care to patients in their own environment. To optimize the logistics of medical equipment for nurses, they’re launching a handy all-in-the-box car organizer. An idea originally conceived by a home care nurse and further developed with professional partners including Verhaert Masters in Innovation, a European service provider in innovation. Thanks to its innovative approach, Verhaert succeeded in identifying important, unprecedented facets related to the various stakeholders. This included going deeper into essential steps in the design process and taking into account current requirements for circularity.

Cooperation as a driving force for innovation, inside and outside the organization

Wit-Gele Kruis West Flanders believes it’s important that innovation stays close to the day-to-day lives of its nurses and helps to relieve them. The idea of a nurse to develop a new organizer that is orderly, practical, and hygienic was picked up by the organization. Through an intensive process, the idea was further developed in collaboration with a master’s student in product development, MakerHealth Howest and Verhaert, among others.

The secret of successful innovation: a holistic approach

Creating products that meet the users’ needs, desires, and requirements, is valued highly at Verhaert. An extensive analysis of the needs of home nurses is therefore an important part of the development process. Structured workshops were organized with stakeholders from various domains to identify in detail both user needs and logistical and financial considerations during the design phase.

After an iterative validation phase of several prototypes, Verhaert proceeded to product engineering, optimizing the final production design. By considering technical, production-related, and user aspects, Verhaert ensured technical feasibility (viable) as well as successful fulfillment of users’ needs and desires (desirable). The organizer provides functional and ergonomically access to any type of care product and can be integrated with the nursing bag, making it the most practical and complete solution on the market.

A circular life cycle

The demand for environmental awareness is increasing day by day. Sustainability and ecology are important drivers in the product development process. The all-in-the-box offers an efficient storage solution design with a circular business model in mind. The product is fully geared toward circularity, with opportunities for refurbishment and 100% recycling. The organizer is made of mono-material, making recycling at end-of-life simple and feasible. Polypropylene with a closed cell structure, also offers durability and robustness with significantly less weight. In addition, flatpack delivery on a euro pallet minimizes fuel consumption and reduces CO2 emissions. Production is also set up with attention to the inclusion of social employment.

Innovative healthcare logistics gains a new dimension

The all-in-the-box solution optimizes the logistics process and reduces costs by limiting expired materials. Nurses are pleased too, as this solution allows them to focus more on patient care. This innovation extends to the broader healthcare sector, where, upon positive validation, the product can be made available to other (home) care organizations.

“The real added value of this development was born from our co-creative workshops.
