Did you realize that the Wi-Fi connection of your car, central heating, air conditioning, garage port, online printer, home battery, or television are entry ports for cybercriminals? And yes, it has many advantages to control or steer your home appliances and home infrastructure remotely, but as we have seen in the past years, every connected device could be turned into an instrument that works against you. Will the world reverse direction and become disconnected again? No, but the world has to step up cybersecurity. As of 2026, the European Union requires mandatory steps from businesses to increase cyber resilience. With the European Union’s new CRA law having taken effect in December 2024, the deadlines have settled. Companies must ensure retroactive reporting is in place by the summer of 2026, and by the summer of 2027, they must fully implement the law for new products. Pro-active action is vital to avoid compliance issues!

The European Union’s new Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is setting a bold expectation: cybersecurity is no longer optional, nor an afterthought. It must be baked into every product from the start. For innovators, engineers, and leaders across industries, this is a turning point: embed cybersecurity into the DNA of your products, and you’ll enter a new era of accountability.

Timeline:

December 10, 2024: The CRA takes effect.

June 11, 2026: Conformity assessment bodies must comply.

September 11, 2026: Manufacturers need to report exploitable vulnerabilities.

December 11, 2027: Main obligations, including cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements, become applicable.

The growing urgency: Why cybersecurity can’t be an afterthought anymore

Cyberattacks are no longer rare events. They’re everyday realities. Fueled by massive digital expansion, more sophisticated threats, enormous financial incentives, and widespread gaps in cyber hygiene and awareness, hacking is growing at an unprecedented pace. In 2024 alone, global cybercrime damages are projected to reach over $1 trillion annually — a staggering figure. Beyond the numbers, the stakes are human: breached medical devices, hijacked smart homes, and sabotaged industrial robots. Consumers and businesses alike are waking up. They demand not just performance and price, but trust. Today, products are getting smarter, more autonomous, and more connected than ever before, integrating sensing technologies, robotics, real-time data flows, and seamless connectivity. But this intelligence comes with greater complexity, and every new line of code, every new sensor, every connection becomes a new potential target. Cybersecurity isn’t just an add-on for these next-generation products. It’s a fundamental promise that must evolve hand-in-hand with innovation, embedded deeply into the hidden code, the firmware, and the systems driving the future.

CRA at a glance: What innovators need to know

At its heart, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is Europe’s bold move to create cybersecurity requirements for all products with digital elements, meaning any product that contains or is software. The regulation demands that cybersecurity be considered from planning, design, and development all the way through production, delivery, maintenance, and beyond. Manufacturers must actively manage vulnerabilities, report incidents, provide clear instructions to users, and ensure security updates are available for as long as the product is expected to be in use.

The ultimate goal? Harmonized, essential cybersecurity rules that apply across the entire value chain, setting a duty of care for the full lifecycle of every connected product. The CRA calls for one thing: security by design. Key requirements include:

Designing products with security principles integrated from the first line of code.

Regular testing and monitoring for vulnerabilities throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Fast, transparent patching of discovered vulnerabilities.

Clear documentation of cybersecurity measures for authorities and users alike.

Accountability across the supply chain, ensuring third-party components and services meet the same security standards.

For developers of embedded systems, from industrial controllers to IoT devices, this regulation cuts deep into the heart of design. Systems must be robust, not just at launch but through years of use in an unpredictable, evolving threat landscape. Here’s the bigger picture: The CRA is more than a checklist. It’s an invitation to reinvent how we innovate, embedding trust, resilience, and responsibility as core elements of product excellence.

CRA-compliance as a competitive edge: Turning challenges into advantages

Early compliance with the CRA offers powerful advantages for innovators willing to lead. First, it builds brand trust, security earns customer loyalty, and strengthens reputations that endure over time. Second, it opens the doors to market access, enabling products that meet CRA standards to move more easily and quickly across borders. Third, it drives cost efficiency, since addressing vulnerabilities during the design phase is dramatically cheaper, up to 100 times, than fixing them after launch. And finally, it fuels an innovation boost: new secure-by-design frameworks and smarter security models unlock faster development cycles and better, safer user experiences.

Across industries, from ambitious start-ups to established industrial giants, early movers have a unique opportunity, not just to meet cybersecurity expectations, but to shape the standard for the next generation of trusted, resilient products.

The path forward: How to strengthen your product strategy

The journey toward true cyber resilience begins with action:

Assess and audit: Map your product’s vulnerabilities today, before hackers do it tomorrow.

Design securely from the start: Integrate threat modeling and secure coding into your embedded systems development.

Monitor continuously: Cyber risks evolve, so must your surveillance and patching strategies.

Collaborate fearlessly: Build cross-functional teams where cybersecurity is part of engineering, not a separate afterthought.

Learn, iterate, improve: Make resilience a permanent layer of your innovation DNA.

Taking cybersecurity seriously is not just about protecting users; it’s also about protecting your business. Non-compliance under the CRA can lead to significant financial penalties, putting reputations, market access, and growth at serious risk. Innovation isn’t just about solving today’s problems. It’s about anticipating tomorrow’s challenges and being ready.

Resilience is the new innovation

In a world that runs on code and connection, the products that thrive will not be the flashiest or the fastest, but the most trusted. The Cyber Resilience Act challenges us all, not just to comply, but to lead.

To embed trust deep into our systems.

To turn security into a competitive advantage.

To build a future where users can be confident in every line of code, every signal, every device.

Mitigation strategies aren’t just technical exercises. They’re blueprints for bold, better, and braver products. And the journey doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start simple: build a secure minimum viable product (MVP) using off-the-shelf components where security has already been designed in. Learn how these components behave, monitor them closely, act on real-world feedback, and iterate.

Remember: cybersecurity isn’t something you add at launch; it must be woven into every phase of your product’s development life cycle, from the very first concept to long after the product is in users’ hands. Let’s build products that don’t just survive tomorrow’s threats—but shape tomorrow’s possibilities.

Every successful product is the result of thousands of choices, some bold and ambitious, others subtle but deeply influential. Among them, the quietest decisions often carry the greatest weight. A small requirement, if overlooked, can ripple through development, shaping performance, cost, safety, and even the product’s future in the market. That’s why requirements management isn’t just a process, it’s the foundation for innovation done right.

Requirements management: Key in complex product development

Today’s products are more advanced than ever. They combine hardware, software, connectivity, and intelligence in ways that push technical and regulatory limits. As innovation grows more layered, so does the challenge of keeping everyone, from engineers to executives, on the same page.

Take, for example, a company designing a reusable, traceable shipment box as an alternative to cardboard packaging. What starts as a simple idea quickly becomes a web of interconnected requirements. To enable tracking, the box needs embedded electronics, which leads to durability and waterproofing challenges. Cybersecurity adds another layer: encrypted data must be secure, but the interface must remain accessible. Meanwhile, sustainability targets demand that the box be reused a certain number of times to offset its environmental impact. That, in turn, raises questions about repairability, modularity, and material selection.

This is where requirements management proves its value. It translates technical needs, product constraints, and stakeholder expectations into a shared understanding. From the first sketch to the final validation, it reduces risks and guides development with clarity. In fast-paced, high-stakes environments, it’s no longer optional. It’s the key to building products that deliver on their promise.

Why do bigger teams demand clearer communication?

As products become more sophisticated, so do the teams building them. Developing that smart shipment box involves dozens of specialists: software engineers, hardware designers, compliance officers, UX teams, supply chain managers, and more. Each brings a unique perspective, but without a common framework, collaboration can easily unravel.

That’s where structured requirements come in. They align diverse voices and disciplines, turning complex input into actionable direction. Requirements ensure that everyone is speaking the same language, reducing confusion and keeping the project moving forward. Without them, a team optimizing the electronics might inadvertently complicate repairability, or a push for added security might damage usability. Requirements management brings order to that chaos. It links strategy to execution, ensuring everyone’s working toward the same outcome, not just the same deadline.

Develop products with purpose from the start

Requirements aren’t just for documenting what the product should do, they shape how the product gets built. Early choices define architecture, influence cost, impact sustainability, and can even steer a company’s business model.

In theory, the shipment box had it all: reusability, repairability, and traceability. Reinforced materials extended its life, modular components made repairs easier, and embedded sensors were shielded against moisture and shock. But then gravity intervened. On high-speed conveyor belts, the unit wobbled, lost balance, and tipped over. Why? Because the electronics module, housing the battery and camera, was mounted on top.

It wasn’t a design flaw. It was a missing requirement. No one had asked how a fully loaded, top-heavy unit behaves under the acceleration of automated transport systems. If the logistics team had been involved early on, or if conveyor dynamics had been mapped as part of the environmental intake, the risk would’ve been clear.

That’s the thing about requirements management: it’s not about specs and features, it’s about mapping all requirements, including real-world handling environments. With full visibility early on, teams avoid costly rework and build smarter from the start.

Building resilience, agility, and trust

Good requirements management creates transparency. It documents not just what a product does, but why it does it. This gives teams the context they need to adapt responsibly when priorities shift or constraints tighten.

Just as importantly, it fosters trust. Internally, it aligns developers, designers, and decision-makers. Externally, it ensures that customers receive a product that performs as promised, whether that’s a shipment box that protects goods and data across dozens of uses or a medical device that meets critical performance thresholds. Fewer surprises. More confidence. And, in the end, stronger loyalty.

Strong start with requirements management to create winning products

Clear, well-managed requirements are more than a project deliverable, they’re a strategic asset. They bring focus, enable agility, and give innovation a strong foundation. They reduce costly detours and provide teams with a roadmap to build with confidence.

Requirements don’t eliminate change, they make it manageable. They help teams assess impact, adapt with confidence, and keep the product on track.

The products that win in the market are the ones built with clarity from the start. So if you’re aiming to create something that lasts, start with the foundation. Master requirements management, and give your ideas the structure they need to succeed. Ready to take control and steer toward a winning product?

From connected beer dispensers and coffee servers to smart ovens and fridges: consumer electronics and FMCG manufacturers are increasingly exploring smart solutions. With sensors and SOCs now more accessible and affordable than ever, companies are leveraging this technology to sense food and beverages in appliances, and as a result, improve quality and guarantee consistency. This allows you to create a direct-to-consumer channel, boost customer loyalty, gather valuable usage data, and ultimately enhance your products and services. It’s an exciting time for innovation, where innovators strive for the perfect beer or coffee, every time you pull the handle or push the button.

Elevating your Fast Moving Consumer Goods appliances

As technology advances, sensors are becoming more affordable due to improved manufacturing processes and increased competition in the market. This competition has resulted in manufacturers offering sensors in a wide variety to target specific applications. In addition, miniaturization is the first step towards integrating sensors into everyday appliances.

Cost efficiency and size are important, but integrating new sensors can be a challenge. So let’s give you a few examples of the sensing technologies we have employed, their potential applications, and the associated challenges.

1. VIRTUAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Temperature is a critical factor to control in appliances, ensuring an accurate and consistent recipe for a quality food or beverage. Temperature sensors are widely used in many applications and are now small and cost-effective. You can use them not only for process monitoring and control but also for signal compensation, as temperature has a considerable influence on most measurements. Despite its widespread usage, there are still challenges that need to be addressed and overcome. Indeed, you can’t indiscriminately add sensors everywhere due to food-safety concerns and/or manufacturing requirements.

For instance, placing a temperature sensor in a beer keg can be difficult. To solve this problem, you can implement virtual temperature sensors, which simulate the behavior of a physical sensor by using data from other physical sensors. Back to the example, the temperature of the contents of a keg can be predicted by using sensors to monitor the temperature of its surroundings. Additionally, you can employ sensor fusion to acquire multiple data and merge the measurements into a single output, ensuring greater reliability and accuracy.

2. SENSITIVE TO PRESSURE?

Beginning with the automotive sector and then extending to numerous industries, pressure sensors are now cost-effective and available in a variety of shapes and sizes. In addition to measuring pressure and flow, you can use these sensors for indirect measurements such as volume. By measuring the pressure and its rate of change over time, it’s possible to calculate the liquid volume contained in a bag.

UFP’s (ultrafine particles) are part of our daily lives, whether you work at the airport or work or live close to heavy traffic roads. In central European cities, ultrafine particles particle concentrations are mainly affected by road traffic emissions. Traffic is the source of over 70% of ultrafine particles in European cities. Airport emissions also seem to affect the air quality locally significantly not only in the airport but even up to cities close by, even if they are located a few kilometers away. To reduce ultrafine particles concentrations, policies should aim to decrease the use of vehicles and minimize exposure to aircraft emissions. Ultrafine particles for example are generated from brake pad abrasion, in the future EURO7 regulation will set limits to reduce ultrafine particlesparticles from this source, however companies and societies need to start acting and cooperating now and innovating throughout the value chain.

Complete elimination of ultrafine particles is virtually impossible yet reducing the sources and individual exposure to ultrafine particles within tolerances is the best way to ensure healthy living.
Creating a healthy workplace is critical for cities and mainly for airports to keep operating. Awareness on the topic of ultrafine particles is rising and receives special attention from stakeholders like employees, unions, employers, media, insurance companies, and politics. Providing a healthy work environment is in that respect essential. Yet all sources of ultrafine particles are not identified yet. Where, when, and how much are employees exposed to ultrafine particles is mostly unknown. To start innovating an important question is which (economic) actors have the reason, motivation, and ability to change the existing solutions of ultrafine particles generation and processes where exposure is high? Which (economic) actors are blocking the current adoption of new solutions?

Innovation for effective measures

People working at for example airports face severe health risks. High concentrations of ultrafine particles in combination with long-term exposure cause cardiovascular diseases and have been shown to cause pulmonary inflammation due to the retention in the lungs. Although the effects are highly unknown, research has proved that ultrafine particles translocate to all organs. Long and heavy exposure induces cough, worsens asthma, and is also linked to diabetes and even cancer. The longer people are exposed and the heavier the exposure, the higher the health risk. Research indicates that especially the bay areas and the platforms are subject to high concentrations of ultrafine particles.
We realize that it is hard to imagine for the average worker what the health risks of ultrafine particles are. Ultrafine particles are invisible, and we can’t smell it (yet). Awareness and behavior are critical success factors elements. The behavior of people who work on the airside has a major influence on the exposure to ultrafine particles. Experience has shown that the workforce working on the platform is difficult to mobilize. Think of the limited use of lifting aids in the baggage halls. Explicit attention to behavioral change is mission-critical.
