Diamonds are a symbol of luxury and prestige, but they’re also a commodity that’s traded worldwide. To correctly estimate the value of rough diamonds, the diamond industry needs to examine its internal structure. This desire to better control the sales process starts with the mining companies, who want to sell their stones at the most favorable prices. The buyers and rough traders, on the other hand, want to pay the right price for the quality.
The solution that has been used for years is cutting so-called ‘viewing windows’, which allows measurements to be taken. However, new technology such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) now offers exciting possibilities to measure diamonds without the need for viewing windows and hence making diamond analysis doable without the need to transfer first the ownership.
